It was a week when it was a different kind of big, but that wasn’t quite the case for the opening night of the new Star Wars film.
The biggest Hollywood movie opening in the history of the UK was a big one, with the opening of the latest instalment in the Star Wars saga, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, on 7 August.
That was followed by the opening day of the next instalments in The Last Jedi, Star Wars: Episode VIII and Star Wars Rebels, with Disney’s Star Wars franchise set to hit theaters in December.
The UK premiere of the third instalement in The Force Awakens, Star Trek Beyond, on 23 August also saw huge crowds.
And it’s all part of the continuing expansion of the franchise, which is set to bring a whole new world to the big screen.
“There are no plans to expand the franchise beyond Star Wars in the future,” the Disney spokeswoman told the BBC.
“However, there are several films that are planned that we are working on with our partners.
We are developing a few new worlds, some of which we’re really excited about.”
The Last Jedi director Rian Johnson, who has previously worked on such films as the Harry Potter films, will return to direct the third film in the franchise – a plot that will see Rey, Luke Skywalker, Finn and Rey’s father, General Leia Organa, embark on a journey that will eventually lead to the destruction of the evil Emperor Palpatine.
It’s a plot inspired by the classic book series by George Lucas, with a plot involving the return of a long-lost member of the Jedi Order who goes by the name of Kylo Ren.
The film will be set around the time the last of the original trilogy, Episode IV: A New Hope, is released, in 2019.
This is a big deal for the film industry.
Last year, it was estimated that a film of the last three films in the series made up around 10% of all ticket sales in the UK.
The Last Knight grossed $1.6bn (£1.3bn) in its opening weekend.
The final instalation in the film series, Rogue Three, is due to hit cinemas on 25 November 2019.
That’s when the new series of films will begin, with Han Solo: A Film by Alan Taylor and Star Trek Into Darkness in 2019, both of which have already been released in the US.
It is also the final installment in the first-ever Star Wars spin-off series, StarWars: The Clone Wars.
The new series is being developed by Fox and will follow the exploits of the legendary character Anakin Skywalker.
It is the first of three Star Wars-related spin-offs.
The Clone Saga will also be made into a feature film in 2019
